2–3 Minute Talk Script

Automated side-loaders reduce some manual lifting but create a large powered operating zone beside the vehicle. The driver should inspect the truck, arm, grabber, cameras, mirrors, alarms, lights, hydraulic systems, and emergency controls before beginning the route.

The operator should approach each container at a controlled speed and confirm that the arm path is clear of people, pets, bicycles, parked vehicles, mailboxes, signs, tree limbs, wires, and other obstructions.

Containers should be positioned and filled according to the collection requirements. Overfilled, damaged, excessively heavy, unstable, or improperly placed containers can slip from the grabber, spill material, or pull the arm toward an obstruction.

No person should enter the arm operating zone while the system is active. The driver should stop the cycle when a person, animal, vehicle, or unexpected object enters the area and should not resume until the zone is confirmed clear.

The operator should monitor the container throughout lifting, dumping, and return. Waste can fall from the container or hopper, and loose lids or protruding material can strike vehicles, property, or people.

Slopes, soft shoulders, road crowns, ditches, curbs, and uneven container placement can affect truck stability and arm alignment. The operator should avoid using the arm when the truck cannot be positioned within safe operating limits.

A container that will not release, an arm that stops unexpectedly, or waste lodged in the hopper should not be corrected by reaching into the mechanism or cycling controls repeatedly. The truck should be secured and serviced under the approved energy-control and recovery procedure.

Backing should be minimized and controlled using mirrors, cameras, alarms, and a spotter when required. The route should stop when visibility systems, arm controls, guards, or emergency functions are unreliable.
