“Backing Into Narrow Alleys”
Key Hazards
- Limited visibility while backing
- Pedestrians entering tight maneuvering areas
- Property damage from tight clearances
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Backing into narrow alleys creates hazards for utility crews, delivery drivers, contractors, and municipal workers operating in congested urban environments. Tight clearances and limited visibility increase the risk of collisions and struck-by incidents.
Drivers should back slowly, use spotters whenever possible, and inspect the area before maneuvering. Mirrors and cameras help improve visibility but do not eliminate blind spots.
Different operations encounter different alley hazards. Utility crews may back near utility poles or fences, municipal workers often operate near parked vehicles or dumpsters, and contractors may maneuver around active job sites.
Pedestrians and property owners may unexpectedly enter narrow work areas, making communication and awareness critical. Drivers should stop immediately if visibility becomes limited.
Safety Reminders
- Use spotters whenever practical.
- Inspect alley clearances before backing.
- Back slowly and deliberately.
- Stop immediately if visibility is lost.
Ask the Crew
- Are there tight maneuvering areas on today’s routes?
- Do any locations require additional spotter support?
