“Battery Storage and Handling”
Key Hazards
- Short circuits from improper contact
- Chemical burns from leaking batteries
- Fire hazards from damaged lithium cells
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Battery storage and handling is important in warehouses, fleet maintenance areas, utilities, and retail operations. Batteries contain corrosive chemicals and can short circuit if contacts are exposed.
Workers should keep batteries stored upright in proper containers and separate new and used batteries. Damaged batteries must be disposed of properly and not thrown into regular waste.
Different batteries pose different risks. Lead-acid batteries can leak acid, lithium batteries pose fire hazards, and small consumer batteries can short in metal bins.
Workers should avoid mixing battery types, keep terminals covered, and store them away from heat sources.
Safety Reminders
- Store batteries in proper containers.
- Keep terminals covered.
- Separate damaged or leaking batteries.
- Avoid mixing battery types.
Ask the Crew
- Do we have damaged batteries that need disposal?
- Are terminals properly protected during storage?
