“Bench Grinder Safety”
Key Hazards
- Wheel breakage causing flying fragments
- Entanglement from loose clothing or gloves
- Eye injuries from sparks and debris
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Bench grinder safety is critical because grinding wheels can shatter and send fragments at high speed. Many injuries happen when guards are missing or the tool rest is set too far from the wheel.
Inspect the wheel before use and remove damaged wheels from service. Keep guards and shields in place. Adjust the tool rest close to the wheel to prevent workpieces from being pulled into the gap.
Use light pressure and let the wheel do the work. Never grind on the side of a wheel unless it is specifically designed for side grinding.
Wear eye protection and face protection. Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair secured away from rotating parts.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect wheels and keep guards/shields installed.
- Adjust the tool rest close to the wheel.
- Use light pressure and proper grinding technique.
- Secure loose clothing and wear eye/face protection.
Ask the Crew
- Is the wheel in good condition and properly guarded?
- Is the tool rest adjusted correctly before grinding?
