Boat electrical systems operate in a wet, vibrating, and corrosive environment. Batteries and wiring that appear acceptable on land may fail when exposed to movement, moisture, salt, fuel vapors, and repeated starting loads.
Batteries should be secured in a suitable tray or compartment so they cannot slide, tip, or strike other equipment. Covers and terminal protection should prevent tools, cargo, and conductive objects from creating a short circuit.
Cables, terminals, switches, fuses, breakers, connectors, and wiring should be inspected for corrosion, looseness, damaged insulation, overheating, improper repairs, and water intrusion. Green corrosion, burned areas, swelling, odor, or melted insulation require attention.
Battery compartments should have the ventilation required by the battery type and vessel design. Charging can create heat and gases, and batteries should not be charged near uncontrolled ignition sources or fuel vapor conditions.
Only compatible chargers and approved procedures should be used. Polarity, voltage, battery chemistry, connection sequence, and charger condition should be confirmed before charging or jump-starting.
Workers should remove jewelry and keep metal tools controlled around exposed terminals. Eye and hand protection may be needed when inspecting, servicing, or replacing batteries because electrolyte and arc hazards can cause serious injury.
Electrical power should be isolated before maintenance when possible. Workers should not bypass fuses, install oversized protection, use household wiring methods, or make temporary repairs that are not suitable for marine service.
A boat with repeated electrical faults, overheating, smoke, arcing, battery damage, or unexplained power loss should be shut down and inspected by qualified personnel before returning to service.
