“Bucket Truck Safety”
Key Hazards
- Contact with overhead powerlines
- Tip-overs from unstable setup
- Falls while entering or exiting the bucket
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Bucket truck safety is critical for utility workers, sign crews, and maintenance personnel performing elevated work near roads, buildings, and overhead utilities. Improper setup or operation can quickly create serious hazards.
Operators should inspect outriggers, hydraulic systems, tires, and fall protection equipment before use. Ground conditions must be stable enough to support the truck, especially near shoulders, soft soil, or recently excavated areas.
Different jobs create different bucket truck risks. Utility crews may work near energized conductors, municipal workers often operate near traffic, and facility maintenance teams may work around buildings, trees, or overhead obstructions.
Workers should maintain safe distances from powerlines, wear appropriate fall protection, and communicate clearly with ground personnel. Proper setup and situational awareness greatly reduce bucket truck incidents.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect outriggers and hydraulic systems before use.
- Verify stable ground conditions.
- Maintain clearance from overhead hazards.
- Use fall protection when required.
Ask the Crew
- Are there unstable ground conditions near today’s work area?
- What overhead hazards exist around the truck setup?
