2–3 Minute Talk Script
Capsizing occurs when a boat overturns, while swamping occurs when enough water enters to reduce stability or flotation. Both can develop rapidly when load, weather, movement, and freeboard are not controlled.
The boat should remain within its capacity and company operating limits. People, fuel, tools, batteries, anchors, and mission equipment all contribute to weight and should be distributed evenly and kept as low as practical.
Passengers should avoid sudden movement, standing together on one side, or leaning over the edge. The operator should direct seating and body position before turns, wake crossings, loading, unloading, or work near the gunwale.
Speed and heading should be adjusted for waves and wakes. Taking water over the bow or stern can add weight quickly, move equipment, reduce freeboard, and affect propulsion or electrical systems.
Bilge pumps, drains, plugs, and hull compartments should be inspected and monitored. Unexpected water accumulation, a changing list, sluggish handling, or lower freeboard should be treated as reasons to stop and investigate.
Wind and current can create instability near dams, bridge piers, intake structures, shorelines, barges, anchors, and fixed lines. The operator should avoid positions where the boat can become pinned, pulled sideways, or exposed broadside to force.
The crew should know what to do if the boat takes on water or overturns. Personal flotation should already be worn, emergency communication should be accessible, and workers should avoid becoming trapped by loose lines or equipment.
A mission should be delayed or ended before the boat reaches its stability limit. Choosing a larger vessel, reducing the load, changing the route, or waiting for better conditions is a safety decision, not a failure to complete the work.
