2–3 Minute Talk Script

Chainsaw safety is essential for utility crews, public works, and construction teams performing cutting or clearing operations. Chainsaws are powerful tools that can cause severe injuries within seconds if not handled correctly.

Kickback is one of the most dangerous chainsaw hazards and occurs when the tip of the bar contacts an object or binds unexpectedly. Maintaining proper grip, stance, and awareness of the bar tip helps reduce this risk.

Chainsaws should be inspected before use to confirm chain tension, chain brake operation, and proper lubrication. Dull chains increase effort and reduce control. Workers should never operate a chainsaw above shoulder height or while standing on unstable surfaces.

Proper PPE includes cut-resistant chaps, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection. Workers should also be aware of surroundings, including falling limbs, uneven ground, and nearby coworkers.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect chainsaw and safety features before use.
  • Wear cut-resistant PPE and hearing protection.
  • Maintain proper footing and stance.
  • Stay clear of the bar tip to prevent kickback.

Ask the Crew

  • Are all chainsaw safety features working properly?
  • Do we have clear escape paths while cutting?
