Key Hazards

  • Cylinders falling, tipping, or being struck
  • Valve damage causing uncontrolled gas release
  • Leaks from valves, regulators, hoses, or fittings
  • Fire or explosion from flammable gases
  • Oxygen displacement or exposure in poorly ventilated areas
  • Improper lifting, dragging, rolling, or transport of cylinders

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Compressed gas cylinders are heavy containers under pressure. If a cylinder falls, is damaged, or has a valve broken off, it can release gas violently and become extremely dangerous.

Cylinders should be secured upright when stored or in use. Chains, straps, racks, carts, or other approved supports help prevent tipping and impact damage.

Valve protection is important during movement and storage. Protective caps should be used when required, and cylinders should not be lifted or pulled by the cap, valve, regulator, or hose.

Cylinders should be moved with approved carts or handling methods. Dragging, rolling, dropping, or carrying cylinders by hand can damage the cylinder or injure the worker.

Regulators, fittings, hoses, and valves should be inspected before use. Leaks, damaged threads, cracked hoses, missing gauges, or incompatible regulators should be corrected before the cylinder is opened.

Workers should understand the gas they are handling. Flammable gases, oxygen, inert gases, toxic gases, and corrosive gases each create different hazards and may require different storage and use controls.

Cylinders should be stored away from heat, sparks, flames, traffic paths, and incompatible materials. Full, empty, and damaged cylinders should be identified according to site procedure.

Safe cylinder handling is about preventing damage and controlling pressure. Secure the cylinder, protect the valve, move it correctly, use the right regulator, and report leaks or damage immediately.

Safety Reminders

  • Secure cylinders upright during storage and use.
  • Use valve caps when required.
  • Move cylinders with approved carts or methods.
  • Do not drag, drop, roll, or lift cylinders by the valve or cap.
  • Inspect regulators, hoses, fittings, and valves before use.
  • Store cylinders away from heat, ignition sources, and traffic.
  • Report leaking or damaged cylinders immediately.

Ask the Crew

  • Are cylinders secured from falling or being struck?
  • Are valve caps, regulators, and fittings in safe condition?
  • Is the correct regulator being used for the gas?
  • Are cylinders being moved with approved equipment?
  • What should the crew do if a cylinder leaks or is damaged?
