Key Hazards

  • Wheel breakage causing flying fragments
  • Kickback from binding or improper angle
  • Fire hazards from sparks and hot material

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Cut-off saw safety is critical because abrasive wheels operate at very high speeds and can fail violently if damaged or used incorrectly.

Inspect the wheel before use and confirm it is rated for the saw speed and the material being cut. Never use cracked, chipped, or wet wheels. Keep guards installed and properly positioned.

Kickback can occur if the wheel binds or the cut pinches. Support the workpiece and maintain a controlled cutting posture. Do not twist the saw in the cut.

Sparks can ignite flammables. Clear the area, control spark direction, and keep extinguishers available when needed.

Safety Reminders

  • Use wheels rated for the saw and material.
  • Inspect wheels and keep guards in place.
  • Support material to prevent binding and kickback.
  • Control sparks and remove flammables from the area.

Ask the Crew

  • Is the wheel correct and in good condition?
  • Are spark and fire hazards controlled in the work area?
