Driving safety basics are essential for employees who operate work vehicles, utility trucks, or personal vehicles for job duties. Most vehicle incidents occur on familiar roads during routine driving, which means complacency is a major factor.
Workers should avoid distractions such as mobile devices, radios, and navigation adjustments while driving. Weather conditions like rain, fog, or snow require slower speeds and greater stopping distances. Fatigue is another major risk—short breaks help maintain alertness.
Different jobs require different driving conditions. Utility workers may drive on gravel or narrow rural roads. Construction crews often navigate congested areas and job sites. Warehouse drivers may move between loading docks and delivery routes.
Open communication reduces driving risks. If workers feel tired, unsure about road conditions, or uncomfortable with a vehicle, they should speak up. Adjusting schedules or routes is far better than risking an accident.
