Drones can inspect tanks, vaults, tunnels, sewers, and other restricted spaces without placing a worker inside, but the aircraft does not eliminate the hazards of the location.
A confined space should still be evaluated under the organization’s confined-space program. Atmospheric hazards, engulfment, mechanical equipment, electrical systems, heat, residue, and access restrictions may affect the drone crew or anyone near the opening.
The aircraft and battery may not be approved for flammable or explosive atmospheres. No drone should be introduced where it could become an ignition source unless the equipment and operation are specifically suitable and authorized.
The route should account for narrow passages, internal structures, liquids, sludge, hanging material, sharp surfaces, and limited visual references. Reliable control and communication should be confirmed before deeper entry.
Openings should be guarded, and the pilot should be positioned so the operation does not expose anyone to a fall, hazardous atmosphere, traffic, or moving equipment.
A recovery plan should be established before flight. Workers must not make an unplanned entry into a permit-required confined space simply to retrieve a stuck or crashed drone.
After exposure, the aircraft may require decontamination and inspection. Residue, biological material, chemicals, or moisture should be handled according to site procedures.
The operation should stop if safe control, communication, atmospheric protection, or recovery planning cannot be maintained.

- Confirm the aircraft is suitable for the atmosphere and environment.
- Guard openings and protect the flight crew from surrounding hazards.
- Plan for loss of signal, lighting, or aircraft control.
- Establish a recovery plan before launching into the space.
- Never make an unplanned confined-space entry to retrieve a drone.
- Inspect and decontaminate exposed equipment appropriately.

- Is the area a permit-required or otherwise controlled confined space?
- Could the atmosphere be toxic, oxygen-deficient, or flammable?
- Is the aircraft approved for the expected environment?
- How will a stuck or crashed drone be recovered without unsafe entry?
- What decontamination will be required after the inspection?
