2–3 Minute Talk Script
Drone flying may appear physically easy, but it can create a high mental workload. The pilot must control the aircraft, monitor battery and warnings, interpret the camera view, maintain visual awareness, and respond to changing site conditions.
Fatigue can slow reaction time, reduce judgment, and make small warning signs easier to ignore. Early starts, night work, heat, cold, travel, emergency response, and long shifts can all affect pilot performance.
Staring at a controller display can create tunnel vision. The pilot should regularly shift attention between the aircraft, surrounding airspace, site activity, flight data, and communication with the observer.
Long inspections and repeated flights can cause visual strain and complacency. Each battery change should not be treated as an automatic continuation without reassessing the aircraft, weather, airspace, crew, and mission.
The visual observer can help detect reduced pilot performance, missed calls, confusion, fixation, or delayed responses. Concerns should be raised early rather than waiting for an error.
Workload should be managed with realistic mission lengths, breaks, crew rotation, clear roles, and limits on simultaneous tasks. The pilot should not be expected to fly while also completing paperwork, directing workers, or handling unrelated calls.
Schedule pressure can make a tired pilot continue through low battery, increasing wind, poor visibility, or repeated warnings. The pilot must have authority to stop without being pressured to obtain one more image or complete one more route.
Safe drone operations require an alert crew that can recognize hazards, communicate clearly, and make conservative decisions throughout the entire mission.

- How long will each flight and the overall operation last?
- What signs of fatigue or fixation should the crew watch for?
- Can duties be rotated or breaks added during repetitive work?
- Will the pilot be supported if the operation needs to stop early?
