A preflight inspection is one of the most important controls in a drone operation. Small defects can become major failures once the aircraft is airborne and exposed to vibration, wind, and changing control inputs.

The airframe should be checked for cracks, loose fasteners, damaged arms, missing covers, contamination, or signs of impact. Damage from a hard landing may not be obvious unless the aircraft is inspected closely.

Propellers should be examined for chips, cracks, bends, looseness, or incorrect installation. A damaged or poorly secured propeller can fail without warning and cause an immediate loss of control.

Motors should rotate freely and remain clear of dirt, string, grass, and other debris. Unusual resistance, noise, heat, or vibration should be treated as a maintenance concern.

Batteries should be correctly charged, undamaged, securely installed, and appropriate for the aircraft. Swelling, punctures, damaged contacts, unusual heat, or error messages are reasons to remove a battery from service.

The controller, antennas, display, navigation systems, camera, sensors, and payload attachments should be checked before takeoff. Loose accessories can affect balance or become falling objects.

Software warnings, firmware compatibility, compass or sensor status, home point, altitude limits, and return-to-home settings should be confirmed before launch. Automatic features should never be assumed to be configured correctly.

If the aircraft does not pass inspection, it should not be flown. Document the problem, label or isolate the equipment, and use another aircraft only after it has completed its own inspection.

• How will a failed inspection item be documented and removed from service?
