Weather affects every part of a drone flight. Conditions that seem manageable at ground level may be stronger or more turbulent at the aircraft’s operating altitude.
Wind speed alone does not describe the full risk. Gusts, wind direction, terrain, buildings, trees, tanks, and other structures can create sudden changes, downdrafts, and turbulence.
The aircraft must be able to return against the wind. A drone that travels outward with a tailwind may use much more battery and time when returning into a headwind.
Visibility can be reduced by haze, fog, smoke, precipitation, glare, shadows, or a low-contrast sky. Part 107 operations generally require at least three statute miles of flight visibility and specified cloud clearance unless an approved waiver applies.
Rain, snow, condensation, and high humidity can affect electronics, sensors, lenses, motors, and battery connections. The aircraft should not be operated outside the manufacturer’s environmental limits.
High and low temperatures can reduce battery performance and change how quickly power is consumed. Batteries and equipment should be conditioned, monitored, and handled according to approved procedures.
Weather should be checked before leaving for the site, again before launch, and throughout the operation. Local observations matter because automated forecasts may not show gusts or turbulence at the exact work area.
The pilot should land early when conditions begin approaching operational limits. Waiting until control or visibility is already affected can leave no safe margin for recovery.
