“Entering and Exiting Traffic”
Key Hazards
- Limited visibility while merging
- Fast-moving traffic near work vehicles
- Sudden lane changes by nearby drivers
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Entering and exiting traffic safely is essential for utility crews, municipal workers, inspectors, and contractors operating vehicles near roadways. Merging into traffic from work zones or shoulder areas creates significant risk if drivers rush or misjudge traffic speed.
Drivers should use mirrors, signals, and shoulder checks before entering traffic. Acceleration should match traffic flow whenever possible, and drivers should wait for adequate gaps rather than forcing merges.
Different work environments create different challenges. Utility crews may enter traffic repeatedly throughout the day, road workers often merge near construction zones, and inspectors may stop frequently along narrow shoulders.
Communication and patience reduce collision risk. Drivers should avoid abrupt movements and remain aware of distracted or aggressive motorists nearby.
Safety Reminders
- Use mirrors and shoulder checks before merging.
- Signal intentions early.
- Wait for safe gaps in traffic.
- Avoid sudden lane movements.
Ask the Crew
- Where will we be entering or exiting traffic today?
- Do any locations require additional caution or spotters?
