Excavator Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.

The excavation plan should identify utilities, soil and ground conditions, trench edges, machine setup, swing radius, spoil placement, travel paths, attachments, lifting needs, pedestrian controls, and communication.

The operator should inspect tracks, undercarriage, boom, stick, bucket, coupler, hydraulic components, controls, alarms, mirrors, cameras, and safety devices before use.

The machine should remain on stable ground with adequate distance from excavation edges, slopes, underground voids, soft shoulders, and other conditions that could fail under its weight.

Workers should stay outside the swing radius, bucket path, counterweight area, and blind spots unless communication is established and the operator has stopped movement.

Utilities should be located and protected, and the boom, bucket, loads, and machine should maintain required clearance from overhead electrical lines.

Lifting should use approved lift points, rated rigging, capacity information, and controlled load paths; attachment changes and service should follow safe shutdown and energy-control procedures.

Operation should stop when a worker enters the danger zone, ground begins to fail, utilities are uncertain, the coupler or hydraulics behave abnormally, or communication with the ground crew is lost.

• What signal or condition requires immediate shutdown?
