“Forklift Safety”
Key Hazards
- Tip-overs from uneven loads
- Pedestrian impacts
- Reduced visibility when carrying tall loads
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Forklift safety is essential in warehouses, manufacturing plants, loading docks, and construction material yards. Even experienced operators face risks when maneuvering heavy loads or working near pedestrians. Slow speeds, visibility, and stable load handling are key to safe operation.
Most forklift incidents occur when loads are unbalanced or operators turn too quickly. Forklifts are designed to handle weight in specific ways, and exceeding limits can cause tip-overs. Operators should secure loads, keep forks low while traveling, and avoid sharp turns.
Different facilities present unique challenges. Warehouses have tight aisles and pedestrian traffic. Industrial plants may have slick floors or uneven expansion joints. Outdoor construction yards often include gravel, slopes, and weather-related hazards.
Communication plays an important role. Pedestrians should never assume the operator sees them, and operators must stop if sightlines are blocked. Using horns, mirrors, and spotters in congested areas greatly reduces risk.
Safety Reminders
- Keep forks low when traveling.
- Inspect forklifts before each shift.
- Never exceed load capacity.
- Use spotters when visibility is limited.
Ask the Crew
- How can we improve forklift-pedestrian separation today?
- Do we have any unusual terrain or loading challenges?
