“Grinding and Cutting Safety”
Key Hazards
- Flying metal or abrasive particles
- Wheel or blade failure
- Sparks igniting combustible materials
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Grinding and cutting safety is essential for workers using angle grinders, cutoff saws, bench grinders, or similar equipment. These tools create sparks, debris, and high-speed motion that can cause serious injuries if used incorrectly.
Workers must inspect wheels and blades for cracks, chips, or excessive wear before use. Guards must remain in place, and tools must be operated at proper angles. Damaged or incorrect accessories can shatter under load.
Different workplaces use grinders and cutters in different ways. Construction crews cut rebar or metal pipe. Industrial workers grind welds or shape components. Maintenance teams use grinders for repairs or adjustments.
Workers should maintain stable footing, keep bystanders clear, and avoid grinding near flammable materials. Proper PPE—including goggles, face shields, and gloves—is essential.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect wheels and blades for cracks.
- Use guards and safety devices properly.
- Wear eye and face protection.
- Keep sparks away from flammable materials.
Ask the Crew
- Do we have the correct wheel or blade for today’s task?
- Are guards and PPE in place and in good condition?
