2–3 Minute Talk Script
Guardrails, Hole Covers, and Floor Opening Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
The work area should be inspected for open sides, floor holes, shafts, stairways, roof penetrations, temporary openings, and areas where construction changes may remove an existing barrier.
Guardrail systems should be complete, securely installed, and suitable for the surface and work activity before employees enter the exposed area.
Hole covers should be secured against displacement, capable of supporting expected loads, and clearly identified so workers do not mistake them for scrap or walking surfaces.
Workers should not remove a cover or guardrail without authorization, an alternate protective method, and a plan to restore protection immediately after the task.
Toeboards, screens, controlled-access areas, and housekeeping should prevent tools and materials from falling through openings onto people below.
Material delivery, carts, lifts, hoses, cords, and access routes should be arranged so workers are not forced toward an unprotected edge or opening.
Work should stop when a cover moves, a guardrail is incomplete, an opening is created without protection, or the work plan requires exposure that has not been controlled.

- Do not move protection without authorization.
- Provide alternate protection before removal.
- Prevent tools and debris from falling through openings.
- Keep access routes away from exposed edges.
- Restore protection immediately after the task.
