“Hearing Protection Basics”
Key Hazards
- Hearing loss from loud machinery
- Communication issues in noisy workplaces
- Discomfort leading to inconsistent PPE use
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Hearing protection basics apply to workers in manufacturing, construction, and utility settings. Exposure to loud equipment or continuous background noise can cause gradual hearing loss. Workers often do not realize the damage until it becomes permanent.
Earplugs and earmuffs must be worn whenever noise levels exceed safe limits. Proper insertion and fit greatly affect performance. Workers should choose protection that is comfortable enough to wear consistently.
Different industries face different sources of noise. Construction crews work near jackhammers and saws, industrial workers near compressors or conveyors, and utility workers near pumps or generators.
Providing adequate hearing protection and reminding coworkers to use it fosters a culture that protects long-term hearing health. Consistent use is the key to preventing noise-related injuries.
Safety Reminders
- Wear hearing protection in designated loud areas.
- Check for proper fit and comfort.
- Replace damaged or dirty earplugs.
- Identify noisy tasks before starting work.
Ask the Crew
- Which work areas today require hearing protection?
- Do we need more earplugs or earmuffs available?
