“Hot Work Safety”
Key Hazards
- Ignition of nearby combustible materials
- Sparks traveling beyond the work area
- Hot metal causing burns
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Hot work safety is critical when welding, cutting, brazing, or grinding in industrial plants, construction sites, or maintenance shops. Sparks and heat can ignite nearby materials even when the risk is not obvious.
Workers should ensure the area is free of combustible materials and that fire extinguishers are accessible. A fire watch may be required when sparks can reach hidden areas. Proper PPE, including face shields and fire-resistant clothing, protects workers from burns.
Different environments have unique risks. Construction sites may have exposed insulation or temporary materials. Industrial facilities often contain flammable liquids, dust, or equipment. Maintenance shops must control sparks near stored chemicals.
Planning and communication prevent most hot work incidents. Workers should confirm all permits or approvals are completed and discuss safety expectations before beginning the job.
Safety Reminders
- Clear the area of combustibles before hot work begins.
- Use proper PPE for welding or cutting.
- Maintain a fire watch when required.
- Verify all hot work permits if applicable.
Ask the Crew
- Do we have a fire watch assigned for today’s hot work?
- Are all combustible materials removed or protected?
