Industrial ovens and furnaces may use electricity, natural gas, propane, oil, steam, or other heat sources. Hazards can include extreme temperature, combustion, pressure, moving loading systems, and hot material that remains dangerous after the cycle ends.
Operators should understand the approved startup, purge, ignition, operating, and shutdown sequence. Skipping steps or repeatedly attempting ignition can allow fuel or vapors to accumulate.
Burners, fuel lines, valves, ventilation, exhaust systems, temperature controls, alarms, flame-safeguard systems, doors, seals, and emergency functions should be monitored according to site procedures.
Workers should stand clear of doors, vents, and openings when hot gases, pressure, flame, steam, or radiant heat may be released. Doors should be opened using the designed method and only when conditions allow.
Loads, racks, carts, fixtures, and materials should be suitable for the temperature and process. Combustible contamination, incompatible material, overloading, poor spacing, or blocked airflow can create fires and uneven heating.
Heat-resistant PPE and tools should be selected for the task, but PPE does not eliminate radiant heat or hot-surface exposure. Workers should use distance, shielding, cooling time, and handling equipment whenever possible.
Alarms, unusual odors, smoke, flame instability, pressure changes, ventilation failure, or unexpected temperature behavior should be treated as reasons to stop and follow the emergency or shutdown procedure.
Maintenance and entry into ovens or furnaces require control of electrical, fuel, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and thermal energy. Equipment should be cooled, isolated, verified, and addressed under any applicable entry procedure before workers enter.
