“Landfill Safety Basics”
Key Hazards
- Workers struck by compactors, loaders, trucks, or public vehicles
- Unstable waste piles, slopes, or uneven ground
- Exposure to hazardous, sharp, or unknown materials
- Methane, odors, dust, or poor air quality
- Pests, birds, animals, and biological hazards
- Fires, hot loads, or reactive waste materials
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Landfills are active work areas with heavy equipment, public traffic, uneven ground, waste materials, dust, odors, and changing conditions. Workers need to stay alert because hazards can appear quickly.
Mobile equipment is one of the biggest hazards. Compactors, loaders, dozers, haul trucks, transfer trailers, and public vehicles may operate in tight spaces with limited visibility.
Workers should follow traffic patterns and stay out of equipment operating zones. Eye contact, radios, spotters, high-visibility clothing, and clear communication help reduce struck-by risk.
Walking surfaces can be unstable. Waste piles, slopes, mud, soft areas, sharp debris, and uneven ground can cause slips, trips, falls, or equipment issues.
Waste materials should not be assumed safe. Sharp objects, chemicals, batteries, pressurized containers, medical waste, hot loads, and unknown materials may be present.
Air quality can change due to dust, smoke, odors, methane, decomposition gases, vehicle exhaust, or fires. Workers should report unusual odors, smoke, or symptoms quickly.
Pests, birds, insects, rodents, and animals can create bite, disease, and distraction hazards. Workers should avoid direct contact with animals or waste that may be contaminated.
Landfill safety depends on traffic awareness, equipment separation, stable footing, and caution around unknown waste. When something looks unusual or unsafe, stop and report it.
Safety Reminders
- Stay clear of mobile equipment operating areas.
- Wear high-visibility clothing.
- Follow landfill traffic patterns and speed limits.
- Watch footing on waste, slopes, mud, and uneven ground.
- Do not handle unknown or hazardous waste without proper procedures.
- Report smoke, odors, hot loads, or unusual materials.
- Use PPE for sharp, dusty, or contaminated conditions.
Ask the Crew
- Where are equipment and vehicle traffic hazards today?
- Are workers staying visible and clear of operating equipment?
- What unstable surfaces or sharp debris are present?
- Could any waste material be hazardous, hot, or unknown?
- Are dust, odors, smoke, pests, or air quality concerns present?
