“Loading Dock Safety”
Key Hazards
- Falls from dock edges
- Struck-by incidents with forklifts
- Pinch points between trucks and docks
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Loading dock safety is critical for warehouses, industrial facilities, and distribution centers. Docks involve large equipment, pedestrian traffic, and elevation changes, making them high-risk areas.
Workers must maintain awareness near dock edges and avoid walking behind forklifts or pallet jacks. Dock plates should be secured before entering trailers, and workers must check truck stabilization to prevent trailer movement.
Different facilities face different challenges. Retail distribution centers may have rapid truck turnover, while manufacturing docks may load oversized materials requiring additional planning.
Communication between forklift operators, drivers, and dock workers prevents pinch points and collisions. Workers should make eye contact before crossing paths and avoid rushing during busy periods.
Safety Reminders
- Stay clear of forklift paths.
- Secure dock plates before use.
- Check trailer stability.
- Maintain awareness near edges.
Ask the Crew
- Are any trailers unstable or not yet chocked?
- Do we have clear traffic flow on the dock today?
