“Manhole Entry Awareness”
Key Hazards
- Toxic or oxygen-deficient atmospheres
- Traffic hazards around access points
- Slip hazards on wet ladders
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Manhole entry awareness is essential for water, wastewater, and stormwater crews. Opening a manhole exposes workers to atmospheric hazards, fall risks, and traffic exposure.
Before opening the lid, workers should check for traffic hazards, block the area, and test for gases using calibrated monitors. Never assume a manhole is safe because it was entered safely in the past.
Different manholes have different conditions—some are dry, some contain flowing wastewater, others may have electrical components or debris. Testing, ventilation, and communication ensure safe entry.
Workers must maintain three points of contact on ladders and ensure attendants remain alert throughout the task.
Safety Reminders
- Test the atmosphere before entry.
- Block off the work zone.
- Use proper ventilation when needed.
- Maintain communication at all times.
Ask the Crew
- Do we have all required entry equipment?
- Are there traffic concerns near today’s access point?
