“Meter Pit Safety”
Key Hazards
- Confined space hazards
- Slips and falls
- Exposure to insects or animals
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Meter pit safety is important for utility workers who routinely access confined or partially confined spaces. These pits can present atmospheric, biological, and fall hazards.
Before opening a meter pit, workers should be aware of traffic, uneven surfaces, and potential trip hazards. Pit covers should be removed carefully.
Atmospheric conditions may be unsafe. Workers should remain alert for signs of poor air quality and follow established safety procedures.
Proper PPE such as gloves and eye protection reduces exposure risks. Good housekeeping around pits prevents slips and falls.
Safety Reminders
- Use caution when removing pit covers.
- Maintain awareness of traffic and footing.
- Watch for insects or animals.
- Wear appropriate PPE.
Ask the Crew
- Is the pit area properly secured?
- Are there any confined space concerns?
