Key Hazards
- Flying debris striking workers or bystanders
- Foot injuries near blades
- Hearing loss from prolonged noise exposure
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Mower and trimmer safety is essential for grounds crews, parks workers, and landscaping contractors. These tools spin at high speeds and can throw rocks, sticks, or metal fragments with significant force.
Before starting equipment, workers should inspect blades, guards, and fuel systems. Wearing eye and hearing protection is mandatory. Workers must also confirm that bystanders, pedestrians, or vehicles are at a safe distance.
Different sites present unique hazards. Parks may have uneven terrain or hidden debris, commercial properties may have high pedestrian traffic, and residential lawns may contain toys or obstacles. Clearing the area before mowing prevents most incidents.
Workers should avoid pulling trimmers toward themselves and must never remove guards. Slowing down and adjusting footing prevents slips, especially on slopes or wet grass.
Safety Reminders
- Wear eye and hearing protection.
- Clear debris before starting.
- Check that all guards are in place.
- Keep feet away from rotating blades.
Ask the Crew
- Are there hidden obstacles in today’s mowing area?
- Do we have proper PPE for noise and debris?
