Nighttime drone operations can support inspections, emergency work, security, and low-light imaging, but darkness reduces visual references and makes distance, altitude, and obstacle clearance harder to judge.
Under Part 107, routine night operations require the remote pilot to have completed the applicable updated knowledge test or recurrent training and the aircraft to use anti-collision lighting visible for at least three statute miles, unless an approved deviation applies.
Anti-collision lights help others see the drone, but they do not illuminate every hazard. Wires, branches, cranes, signs, structures, and terrain may remain nearly invisible until the aircraft is too close.
The site should be inspected during daylight when practical. Flight paths, launch areas, emergency landing locations, overhead hazards, and changes in elevation should be identified before darkness hides them.
The pilot and visual observer should protect their night vision. Bright controller screens, vehicle headlights, flashlights, and work lights can create glare or temporary visual loss.
Aircraft orientation may be harder to identify against a dark sky or illuminated background. Distance should be limited to the range where position and movement can be judged confidently.
Night work may also increase fatigue and reduce communication. Crews should monitor workload, breaks, alertness, and whether the mission remains necessary as conditions change.
Controlled airspace authorization is still required when applicable. If the crew cannot maintain clear visual awareness or safe separation, the aircraft should be returned and landed.
