“Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Safety”
Key Hazards
- Vehicle defects causing crashes or breakdowns
- Tire, brake, steering, or light failures during travel
- Leaks, low fluids, or mechanical problems going unnoticed
- Loose cargo, tools, or equipment shifting during driving
- Drivers operating vehicles with known defects
- Poor visibility from damaged mirrors, dirty glass, or failed lights
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Pre-trip inspections help catch vehicle problems before they become roadside emergencies, crashes, or equipment damage.
Drivers should inspect the vehicle before use according to company procedure. The inspection should match the vehicle type and work being performed.
Tires, wheels, lug nuts, brakes, steering, lights, mirrors, horn, wipers, glass, and backup alarms should be checked.
Fluid levels, leaks, belts, hoses, fuel, battery condition, and unusual odors or noises should be reported when found.
Cargo, tools, equipment, cones, ladders, trailers, and loose items should be secured before driving.
Emergency equipment such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, triangles, spill kits, radios, or PPE should be checked when required.
Defects should not be ignored. A small issue at the start of the day can become a major failure on the road or at the jobsite.
Safe pre-trip inspection depends on taking the time to check the vehicle, documenting concerns, reporting defects, and keeping unsafe vehicles out of service until reviewed.
