“Rigging Hardware: Hooks and Shackles Safety”
Key Hazards
- Using hooks or shackles that are not rated for the load
- Bent, cracked, stretched, or worn rigging hardware
- Improper shackle pin installation or loose pins
- Side loading hooks or shackles beyond their intended use
- Missing or damaged hook latches
- Workers exposed to suspended loads or failed rigging
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Hooks and shackles are small parts of a lift, but they carry the load. If hardware fails or is used incorrectly, the load can fall without warning.
Rigging hardware should be inspected before use. Workers should look for cracks, bends, deformation, wear, damaged threads, missing markings, corrosion, heat damage, or other defects.
Hooks and shackles must be rated for the load and used within their intended configuration. The weight of the load, sling angle, hitch type, and rigging setup all matter.
Shackle pins should be fully seated and secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A loose or cross-threaded pin can fail during lifting.
Hooks should have functional latches when required. A damaged or missing latch can allow slings or hardware to slip out.
Side loading should be avoided unless the hardware is specifically rated and approved for that use. Hardware is strongest when loaded in the direction it was designed for.
Hardware should be compatible with the sling, lifting point, and load. Mismatched sizes can create point loading, binding, or poor seating.
Safe hook and shackle use depends on inspection, correct rating, proper pin and latch condition, compatible rigging, and keeping workers out from under suspended loads.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect hooks and shackles before use.
- Confirm hardware is rated for the load.
- Check for cracks, bends, wear, corrosion, and deformation.
- Fully seat and secure shackle pins.
- Do not side load hardware unless approved.
- Use hooks with working latches when required.
- Keep workers clear of suspended loads.
Ask the Crew
- Is the hardware rated for this lift?
- Are hooks, shackles, pins, and latches in good condition?
- Is the shackle pin fully seated?
- Could the hardware be side loaded?
- Are workers clear of the load path and drop zone?
