Key Hazards
- Struck-by vehicles
- Limited visibility during dawn, dusk, or storms
- Confusion from poor signage or traffic flow
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Roadway work zone awareness is essential for utility crews, construction teams, and municipal workers who perform tasks near traffic. Vehicles may approach quickly, and drivers may be distracted or unfamiliar with the area.
Workers should set up proper signage, cones, and barriers according to local guidelines. High-visibility clothing improves recognition by drivers, especially during low light or poor weather.
Different environments create different challenges. Urban areas have heavy traffic, rural roads may have high speeds, and industrial campuses may involve truck traffic. Workers must adjust their controls accordingly.
Communication keeps crews safe. Workers should never turn their back to traffic for extended periods and should use spotters when working near moving vehicles.
Safety Reminders
- Wear high-visibility PPE.
- Set up work zone traffic control correctly.
- Stay alert to surrounding traffic.
- Use spotters for blind areas.
Ask the Crew
- What traffic hazards exist at today’s location?
- Do we need to adjust cone or signage placement?
