Key Hazards

  • Falls from edges
  • Trips on cables, flashing, or materials
  • Weak spots in roof decking

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Roof surface awareness is essential for HVAC technicians, construction workers, utility teams, and inspectors. Rooftops contain elevation hazards, slippery surfaces, and hidden weak areas.

Workers should watch for loose gravel, wet membranes, or frost that can cause slips. Identifying anchor points and maintaining a safe distance from edges reduces fall risks.

Different roofs present different hazards—flat commercial roofs may have ballast, while residential roofs have steeper slopes and fragile shingles. Older roofs may hide weak decking or rot.

Workers should communicate about hazards and ensure proper tie-off points when required. Weather conditions should also be monitored closely, as wind and rain increase risks.

Safety Reminders

  • Stay aware of roof edges.
  • Avoid walking on wet or icy sections.
  • Identify anchor points early.
  • Watch for soft or weak decking.
