Key Hazards

  • Flying sparks and debris
  • Wheel shattering from improper use
  • Loss of control during grinding

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Safe grinder operations are essential for fabrication shops, maintenance departments, and construction teams. Grinders operate at high RPMs, and even small mistakes can cause serious injuries. Workers should always inspect the tool before starting, checking that the guard is secure, the wheel is undamaged, and the tool rest is properly adjusted.

Loose clothing, gloves, or dangling PPE can get caught in rotating wheels. Workers should maintain a firm grip and keep both hands on the tool. Angle grinders must be held with the correct handle and never operated one-handed.

Different workplaces use grinders differently. Fabrication shops shape metal edges, maintenance workers remove rust or burrs, and construction teams cut masonry or rebar. Each material produces unique spark patterns and debris risks, making PPE essential.

Workers should never exceed the wheel's rated RPM and must allow the grinder to reach full speed before contacting the workpiece. Good communication ensures that coworkers stay clear of the spark path.

Safety Reminders

  • Check guards and tool rests before use.
  • Wear eye and face protection.
  • Inspect wheels for cracks.
  • Hold grinders firmly with both hands.

Ask the Crew

  • Is our grinder setup correct for today’s task?
  • Do we have the correct wheel for the material?
