Key Hazards
- Strains from heavy or awkward crates and totes
- Pinched fingers between containers or racks
- Falling or shifting stacked containers
- Blocked visibility while carrying large totes
- Cuts from broken plastic, wood, straps, or metal edges
- Trips caused by containers left in walkways
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Crates and totes are common in storage, shipping, maintenance, and warehouse work, but they can create injuries when they are too heavy, poorly stacked, damaged, or carried without a clear path.
Workers should check the weight and condition before lifting. A container may look manageable but contain heavy parts, liquid, tools, hardware, or unevenly distributed material.
Proper lifting technique matters. Workers should keep the load close, avoid twisting, and use team lifting or mechanical help when a crate or tote is too heavy or awkward.
Handles should be inspected before use. Broken handles, cracked plastic, splintered wood, loose straps, or sharp edges can cause hand injuries or cause the load to drop.
Stacked crates and totes should be stable and not overloaded. Uneven stacks can shift when bumped, when containers are removed, or when equipment moves nearby.
Large containers can block visibility while being carried. Workers should avoid walking blindly through doorways, aisles, stairs, parking lots, or areas with forklifts and carts.
Containers should not be left in aisles, exits, stairways, or work paths. Even a lightweight tote can create a trip hazard if it is placed where people walk.
Safe crate and tote handling requires planning the lift, checking the container, keeping hands clear of pinch points, and using equipment when the load is more than one worker can safely handle.
Safety Reminders
- Check the weight before lifting.
- Inspect handles, straps, edges, and container condition.
- Use team lifting or equipment for heavy or awkward loads.
- Keep hands clear of pinch points.
- Stack crates and totes evenly and securely.
- Do not carry loads that block your view.
- Keep containers out of walkways and exits.
Ask the Crew
- Is the crate or tote too heavy or awkward for one person?
- Are handles, straps, and edges in safe condition?
- Could the load shift while being carried?
- Is the travel path clear?
- Are stacked containers stable and away from walkways?
