Key Hazards

  • Loads shifting or falling from the truck bed
  • Strains from lifting heavy or awkward materials
  • Pinch points around tailgates, straps, and cargo
  • Workers climbing into or jumping from truck beds
  • Poor visibility while backing or unloading
  • Unsecured materials creating roadway or jobsite hazards

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Loading and unloading pickup trucks is routine work, but it can create serious injuries when materials shift, workers lift awkwardly, or cargo is not secured before travel.

Before loading, workers should consider the weight, shape, sharp edges, balance, and final destination of the material. Heavy items should be handled with equipment or team lifting when needed.

Loads should be distributed evenly and secured before the truck moves. Straps, tie-downs, racks, tailgates, and covers should be appropriate for the material and checked for damage.

Workers should stay alert when releasing straps or opening tailgates. Material may have shifted during travel and can fall, roll, or slide out unexpectedly.

Climbing into and out of truck beds should be done carefully. Workers should avoid jumping down, use stable steps or handholds when available, and watch for mud, ice, tools, or loose material underfoot.

Pinch points are common when handling cargo. Hands and fingers can be caught between materials, tailgates, bed rails, straps, ramps, and equipment.

The loading and unloading area should be controlled. Workers should watch for traffic, backing vehicles, pedestrians, slopes, uneven ground, and equipment moving near the truck.

Safe pickup truck loading depends on planning the load, securing it properly, controlling body position, and checking the area before material is moved.

Safety Reminders

  • Plan the load before lifting or moving material.
  • Use team lifting or equipment for heavy or awkward items.
  • Distribute weight evenly in the truck bed.
  • Secure loads before driving.
  • Stand clear when releasing straps or opening the tailgate.
  • Avoid jumping from the truck bed.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of pinch points.

Ask the Crew

  • Is the material too heavy or awkward for one person?
  • Is the load secured against shifting or falling?
  • Could cargo move when straps or the tailgate are released?
  • Is the unloading area clear of traffic and trip hazards?
  • Are workers using safe access into and out of the truck bed?
