“Safe Operation of Golf Carts and UTVs”
Key Hazards
- Rollovers on slopes, turns, or uneven ground
- Passengers falling from moving carts or UTVs
- Collisions with pedestrians, vehicles, equipment, or fixed objects
- Excessive speed for terrain or visibility
- Distracted or unauthorized operation
- Poor braking or control on wet, loose, or uneven surfaces
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Golf carts and UTVs may seem simple to operate, but they can still cause serious injuries when driven too fast, overloaded, used on slopes, or operated around pedestrians and traffic.
Operators should inspect the vehicle before use. Brakes, steering, tires, lights, horn, mirrors, seat belts, battery or fuel system, and controls should be checked.
Speed should match the terrain and conditions. Wet grass, gravel, mud, slopes, curves, potholes, and crowded areas require slower operation.
Passengers should ride only in designated seats and keep arms, legs, and belongings inside the vehicle. No one should stand, hang off the side, or ride in cargo areas unless designed for that use.
Seat belts should be used when provided, especially in UTVs or vehicles designed with rollover protection.
Operators should use caution on slopes and turns. Sudden steering, uneven ground, high speed, and raised or shifting cargo can increase rollover risk.
Pedestrians, public areas, parking lots, job sites, and road crossings require extra attention. Drivers should assume pedestrians may not hear or see the vehicle coming.
Safe golf cart and UTV operation depends on controlled speed, authorized use, proper passengers, inspection, and awareness of terrain and people nearby.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the cart or UTV before use.
- Drive at a safe speed for terrain and visibility.
- Carry passengers only in designated seats.
- Use seat belts when provided.
- Avoid sharp turns and unsafe slopes.
- Watch for pedestrians, traffic, and equipment.
- Do not allow unauthorized or distracted operation.
Ask the Crew
- Is the cart or UTV in safe operating condition?
- Are passengers seated properly?
- Are slopes, turns, gravel, mud, or wet surfaces present?
- Could pedestrians or vehicles cross the route?
- Is the operator authorized and focused on driving?
