“Safe Operation of Pressure Washers”
Key Hazards
- Lacerations from high-pressure streams
- Kickback from wand triggers
- Slip hazards from overspray
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Safe operation of pressure washers is important for groundskeepers, facility maintenance teams, and construction workers. Pressure washers produce high-force streams that can puncture skin.
Workers should maintain a firm grip on the wand and avoid directing spray at themselves or others. Kickback is strongest when the trigger is first pulled.
Different surfaces react differently to pressure. Soft materials can erode quickly, and overspray can create slippery walking surfaces.
Workers should ensure engines are operated outdoors or in well-ventilated areas to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
Safety Reminders
- Maintain a firm grip on the wand.
- Avoid spraying near feet or hands.
- Watch for slippery surfaces.
- Operate fuel-powered washers outdoors.
Ask the Crew
- Do we need PPE for high-pressure spray?
- Is ventilation adequate for today’s work?
