Key Hazards

  • Chemical splashes to skin or eyes
  • Breathing fumes, vapors, or aerosols
  • Mixing incompatible liquids
  • Using unlabeled or incorrect containers
  • Spills from poor pouring technique or unstable containers
  • Reactions from incorrect order of mixing or concentration

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Pouring and mixing liquid products can create splash, vapor, spill, and reaction hazards. The risk depends on what is being poured, the container size, the concentration, and whether materials are compatible.

Workers should identify the product before handling it. Labels, procedures, and safety data sheets should be reviewed so workers understand PPE, hazards, dilution requirements, and first aid.

Liquids should only be mixed when the procedure allows it. Mixing the wrong products can release heat, toxic gas, pressure, foam, or violent reactions.

Containers should be clean, compatible, stable, and labeled. A container with old residue or no label can create exposure or mixing hazards.

PPE should be selected for splash and vapor hazards. Gloves, goggles, face shields, aprons, respiratory protection, or chemical-resistant clothing may be needed.

Ventilation should be provided when fumes or vapors may be released. Small rooms, utility spaces, vehicles, tanks, and enclosed areas can concentrate vapors quickly.

Pouring should be controlled. Workers should avoid overfilling, splashing, lifting containers above shoulder height, or pouring from damaged containers.

Safe pouring and mixing requires slowing down. Confirm the product, use the right container, follow the correct order, wear PPE, control ventilation, and clean up spills immediately.

Safety Reminders

  • Read labels and safety information before pouring or mixing.
  • Do not mix products unless approved by procedure.
  • Use clean, compatible, labeled containers.
  • Wear PPE for splash, skin, eye, and vapor hazards.
  • Provide ventilation when fumes or vapors may be present.
  • Pour slowly and avoid overfilling.
  • Clean up spills immediately according to procedure.

Ask the Crew

  • What liquid product is being poured or mixed?
  • Are the materials compatible?
  • Is the container clean, stable, compatible, and labeled?
  • What PPE is required for splash or vapor exposure?
  • Is ventilation adequate for this task?
