Safe speed is not a single number. It is the speed that allows the operator to see hazards, take effective action, and stop or maneuver within the distance available under the current conditions.
Visibility, traffic density, boat handling, wind, current, waves, water depth, background lighting, and nearby structures all affect safe speed. A speed that is acceptable in open water may be unsafe near a dock, bridge, intake, work crew, or congested channel.
The operator should reduce speed before entering uncertainty rather than waiting until a hazard is confirmed. Fog, glare, bends, narrow channels, floating debris, shoreline vegetation, and moored vessels can hide risks until the boat is close.
Sudden acceleration, turning, or stopping can throw workers off balance and shift equipment. The operator should announce maneuvers when practical and allow the crew time to secure themselves and the work area.
Wake is part of the vessel's operation and can injure people or damage property. Speed should be reduced near docks, ramps, shore crews, small boats, paddlers, workers on floating platforms, and areas posted for restricted wake.
Crossing another vessel's wake should be planned at a controlled speed and angle appropriate for the boat. Passengers should be warned and kept seated or braced so they are not thrown against the deck or equipment.
Shallow water can change steering and stopping performance and may conceal rocks, stumps, bars, or debris. High speed also reduces the operator's ability to react after striking an object or losing propulsion.
Schedule pressure should never determine boat speed. The operator should choose a conservative speed that protects the crew, vessel, nearby workers, other waterway users, and the surrounding property.
Safety Reminders
- Match speed to visibility, traffic, current, depth, and maneuvering room.
- Slow before entering bends, glare, fog, congestion, or uncertain water.
- Warn the crew before sudden maneuvers when practical.
- Reduce wake near docks, workers, small craft, and shorelines.
- Cross wakes at a controlled speed and safe angle.
- Use extra caution in shallow or debris-filled water.
- Do not let schedule pressure determine operating speed.

- Can the boat stop or turn within the visible distance?
- What traffic, current, depth, wake, or visibility conditions affect speed?
- Could the boat's wake endanger workers or damage nearby property?
- Are passengers and equipment ready for upcoming maneuvers?
- Should speed be reduced before entering the next area?
