“Safe Storage of Compressed Gas Cylinders”
Key Hazards
- Cylinders falling or tipping over
- Valve damage leading to rapid release
- Improper separation of incompatible gases
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Safe storage of compressed gas cylinders is important in welding shops, laboratories, maintenance areas, and industrial facilities. Cylinders store gases under high pressure and can become dangerous projectiles if valves are damaged.
Workers should store cylinders upright and secure them with chains or straps. Never leave a cylinder standing freely or leaning against a wall.
Different gases require different storage considerations. Oxygen must be stored separately from flammable gases. Empty and full cylinders should be labeled and kept apart to prevent mix-ups.
Inspecting valve caps and ensuring they are installed during transport reduces the chance of accidental valve impact.
Safety Reminders
- Store cylinders upright and secured.
- Keep oxygen away from fuel gases.
- Install valve caps during transport.
- Label empty and full cylinders.
Ask the Crew
- Are all cylinders properly secured today?
- Do any cylinders need to be moved or re-labeled?
