Key Hazards
- Falls from the bucket or platform
- Contact with overhead power lines or energized equipment
- Tip-over from poor setup, slopes, or unstable ground
- Workers struck by traffic, equipment, or dropped objects
- Crush hazards between the bucket and fixed structures
- Improper use of outriggers, controls, or fall protection
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Bucket trucks allow elevated work from a vehicle-mounted platform, but they combine working-at-height, vehicle, traffic, and overhead hazards.
Workers should inspect the bucket truck before use. Controls, boom, bucket, outriggers, tires, hydraulics, alarms, communication systems, fall protection anchor points, and emergency lowering systems should be checked.
The truck should be positioned on firm, stable ground. Slopes, soft shoulders, holes, grates, traffic lanes, and underground structures can affect stability.
Outriggers should be deployed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and site conditions. Pads may be needed to distribute load.
Overhead hazards must be identified before raising the boom. Power lines, service drops, communication lines, trees, signs, buildings, and traffic signals can create serious hazards.
Workers should use required fall protection and stay inside the bucket. Climbing out of the bucket or standing on rails is unsafe.
Traffic control may be needed when bucket truck work occurs near roads, parking lots, sidewalks, or public areas.
Safe bucket truck use depends on trained operation, stable setup, overhead clearance, fall protection, traffic control, and communication between workers in the bucket and on the ground.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the bucket truck before use.
- Set up on firm, stable ground.
- Use outriggers and pads as required.
- Maintain clearance from overhead power lines.
- Use fall protection when required.
- Keep tools and materials secured at height.
- Use traffic control when working near vehicles or pedestrians.
Ask the Crew
- Has the bucket truck been inspected?
- Is the setup area stable and suitable for outriggers?
- What overhead electrical or structural hazards are present?
- Is fall protection required and being used correctly?
- Are workers and the public protected from traffic and dropped objects?
