“Safe Use of Coil Nailers”
Key Hazards
- Puncture injuries from fired nails
- Hands placed behind or near the fastening point
- Ricochet from knots, metal, concrete, or hard material
- Unexpected firing from poor trigger control
- Air hose, pressure, or fitting hazards
- Improper jam clearing or loading
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Coil nailers drive fasteners with enough force to cause serious puncture injuries. Safe use depends on tool control, hand placement, and understanding the material being fastened.
Workers should inspect the nailer before use. Nose piece, trigger, safety contact, magazine, air hose, fittings, guards, fasteners, and pressure settings should be checked.
Hands and body parts should stay away from the fastening point. Workers should never place a hand behind material where a nail could pass through.
The tool should be pointed away from the body and other workers. A nailer should never be carried with a finger on the trigger.
The correct fasteners and air pressure should be used. Excessive pressure can increase recoil, blow-through, and damage to the tool or material.
Workers should watch for ricochet hazards. Nails can deflect off knots, metal plates, concrete, straps, fasteners, or hard surfaces.
The air supply should be disconnected before clearing jams, loading, servicing, or leaving the tool unattended.
Safe coil nailer use depends on inspection, trigger discipline, correct pressure, PPE, hand placement, and disconnecting air before maintenance.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the coil nailer before use.
- Use the correct fasteners and pressure.
- Keep hands away from the fastening point.
- Point the tool away from yourself and others.
- Do not carry the tool with a finger on the trigger.
- Disconnect air before clearing jams or servicing.
- Wear eye and hearing protection when needed.
Ask the Crew
- Is the nailer in safe working condition?
- Are the correct nails and pressure being used?
- Where are the worker’s hands during fastening?
- Could a nail pass through or ricochet?
- Has air been disconnected before jam clearing?
