Key Hazards

  • Distracted work while reading digital displays
  • Falls from ladders, platforms, or elevated surfaces
  • Dropped levels striking workers or damaging equipment
  • Pinched fingers from magnetic bases or moving materials
  • Incorrect readings from damaged, dirty, or uncalibrated tools
  • Working near traffic, equipment, edges, or openings

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Digital levels are useful for layout, alignment, slope checks, and installation work, but the measuring task often happens near ladders, equipment, traffic, or elevated surfaces.

Workers should inspect the level before use. Display, batteries, buttons, vials, edges, magnets, reference surfaces, and calibration status should be checked.

The worker should stay aware of footing and surroundings while reading the display. Focusing on the number can distract from edges, openings, steps, vehicles, or equipment.

When using a digital level at height, workers should use proper access equipment and avoid overreaching. If the reading cannot be taken safely, reposition the ladder or platform.

Magnetic levels should be handled carefully around metal surfaces. Strong magnets can snap the tool into place and pinch fingers.

Digital readings should be verified when safety or fit depends on accuracy. Dirt, burrs, damaged surfaces, weak batteries, and calibration problems can affect readings.

Levels should be secured when used at height. A dropped tool can injure people below or fall into machinery, tanks, pits, or openings.

Safe digital level use depends on inspection, stable access, attention to surroundings, controlled magnetic contact, and verifying important measurements before work continues.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect the digital level before use.
  • Check battery condition and calibration when needed.
  • Stay aware of footing while reading displays.
  • Use safe access for elevated measurements.
  • Avoid overreaching from ladders or platforms.
  • Keep fingers clear of magnetic pinch points.
  • Secure the tool when working at height.

Ask the Crew

  • Is the digital level in good condition?
  • Is safe access available for the measurement?
  • Could the worker be distracted by the display?
  • Could magnets pinch fingers or attach unexpectedly?
  • Does the reading need to be verified before installation?
