“Safe Use of Digitally Locked Doors”
Key Hazards
- Emergency exits blocked or delayed by malfunctioning locks
- Workers locked out of critical areas during emergencies
- Unauthorized access from shared codes, lost fobs, or poor access control
- Battery or power failure affecting door operation
- Doors propped open and defeating security controls
- Workers forcing doors or bypassing locks instead of reporting problems
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Digitally locked doors can improve security and access control, but they must still allow safe entry, exit, and emergency response.
Workers should know how the door normally operates and what to do if the keypad, card reader, fob, battery, or power supply fails.
Emergency egress should never be blocked. Workers should be able to exit through required routes without special knowledge, delay, or unsafe actions.
Access codes, key cards, and fobs should be protected. Shared codes, lost fobs, or unlocked devices can create security and safety issues.
Digitally locked doors should not be propped open unless authorized. Propping doors can defeat security, fire separation, temperature control, or access procedures.
Malfunctioning locks, slow releases, damaged readers, sticking doors, alarm issues, or failed batteries should be reported promptly.
Workers should not force doors, tape latches, bypass sensors, or modify access controls unless they are authorized to do so.
Safe use of digitally locked doors depends on maintaining emergency egress, protecting access credentials, reporting malfunctions, and following access control procedures.
