Electric can openers are common in kitchens, cafeterias, break rooms, and food service areas. The main hazards are sharp lids, moving blades, electrical exposure, and sanitation.

Workers should inspect the can opener before use. Cord, plug, housing, blade, drive wheel, switch, magnet, base, and guards should be in good condition.

Hands and fingers should stay away from the cutting wheel and lid edge. Workers should let the opener do the work instead of forcing or holding the blade area.

Cans should be aligned properly before starting. Poor alignment can create jagged edges, sudden movement, or spills.

Sharp lids should be handled carefully and placed in an appropriate waste container. Workers should not press down trash with bare hands where lids may be hidden.

Electrical parts should be kept away from standing water, wet counters, sink spray, and damaged outlets.

The opener should be cleaned according to procedure. Food residue can attract pests, contaminate food, or make the equipment harder to operate safely.
