Foam cutter safety depends on the type of cutter and the material being cut. Hot-wire cutters, heated blades, and sharp cutting tools can create burn, fume, fire, electrical, and cutting hazards during insulation, packaging, fabrication, and similar work.
Workers should inspect the foam cutter before use. Cords, plugs, switches, handles, heating elements, blades, guards, stands, and controls should be in safe condition.
Hot wires and heated cutters can burn skin quickly. Workers should keep hands, clothing, cords, and other materials away from heated elements and allow hot parts and freshly cut surfaces to cool before handling.
Heating foam can release fumes. Workers should review information for the foam or coating being cut and provide adequate ventilation or respiratory protection when required.
Fire hazards should be controlled around heated foam cutters. Foam, dust, paper, plastic, cardboard, solvents, adhesives, and other combustible materials should be kept away from hot elements.
Blade-style foam cutters should be treated as sharp cutting tools. Hands should stay out of the cutting path, the material should be supported, and exposed blades should be covered or secured when not in use.
Foam sheets, blocks, and insulation panels should be stable before cutting. Large or awkward pieces can shift, fall, or force the worker into an unsafe position while guiding the cutter.
Safe foam cutter use means inspecting the tool, controlling heat and sharp edges, providing ventilation, keeping combustibles away, supporting the material, and disconnecting power before adjustments, cleaning, or storage.
