“Safe Use of Foggers and Misters”
Key Hazards
- Breathing mist, vapor, or aerosolized chemicals
- Skin or eye exposure from spray drift
- Slip hazards from wet floors or overspray
- Electric shock from cords, plugs, or wet conditions
- Chemical drift affecting nearby workers or public areas
- Improper product concentration or equipment setup
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Foggers and misters can spread water, disinfectants, pesticides, odor control products, or other liquids over a wide area. That makes setup, product selection, ventilation, and drift control important.
Workers should know what product is being used before operating a fogger or mister. The label, safety data sheet, dilution instructions, PPE requirements, and ventilation needs should be reviewed.
Aerosols and fine mist can be inhaled more easily than liquid from a normal container. Workers should avoid breathing mist and should use respiratory protection when required by the product or procedure.
Spray drift should be controlled. Fog or mist can move into nearby work areas, air intakes, vehicles, food areas, offices, public spaces, or onto people who are not wearing protection.
Electrical safety matters when using powered equipment near water or liquid products. Cords, plugs, switches, batteries, and outlets should be protected from wet conditions and damage.
Wet surfaces can become slippery quickly. Floors, stairs, ramps, concrete, tile, and equipment platforms should be monitored for overspray and marked or blocked when needed.
The equipment should be inspected before use. Hoses, tanks, nozzles, filters, seals, cords, pumps, and pressure settings should be checked for leaks, clogs, or damage.
Safe fogger and mister use depends on controlling the product, the mist, and the area. Keep people clear, provide ventilation, use proper PPE, and stop if drift or exposure cannot be controlled.
Safety Reminders
- Review the product label and SDS before use.
- Use PPE required for the chemical and application method.
- Control drift into nearby work or public areas.
- Keep electrical components protected from wet conditions.
- Watch for slippery surfaces from overspray.
- Inspect tanks, hoses, nozzles, cords, and seals.
- Keep unprotected people out of the application area.
Ask the Crew
- What product is being applied with the fogger or mister?
- Could mist or drift reach nearby workers, air intakes, or public areas?
- What PPE and ventilation are required?
- Are cords, plugs, and equipment protected from liquid exposure?
- Could overspray create slip hazards?
