“Safe Use of Folding Scaffolds”
Key Hazards
- Falls from unstable or unguarded scaffold platforms
- Scaffold collapse from unlocked or damaged folding mechanisms
- Unlocked wheels or casters causing movement
- Overloading with workers, tools, or materials
- Overreaching instead of repositioning the scaffold
- Tools or materials falling from the platform
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Folding scaffolds can be convenient for maintenance, painting, and light construction, but they must be fully opened, locked, inspected, and used within their limits.
Workers should inspect the scaffold before use. Frames, hinges, locking pins, braces, platforms, wheels, casters, guardrails, and labels should be checked.
Folding mechanisms and locks must be fully engaged before anyone climbs or works from the platform. A partially locked scaffold can shift or collapse.
The scaffold should be set up on a firm, level, stable surface. Slopes, holes, debris, cords, wet floors, and uneven surfaces can affect stability.
Wheels or casters should be locked before workers climb or work. The scaffold should not move while someone is on it unless specifically designed and allowed by procedure.
Load limits should be followed. Workers should include the weight of people, tools, buckets, materials, and equipment on the platform.
Workers should avoid overreaching. If the work cannot be reached safely, the scaffold should be moved and relocked.
Safe folding scaffold use depends on inspection, fully locked setup, stable surfaces, wheel control, load limits, and staying centered on the platform.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect folding scaffolds before use.
- Make sure all locks and braces are fully engaged.
- Set up on firm, level surfaces.
- Lock wheels or casters before climbing.
- Follow platform load limits.
- Move the scaffold instead of overreaching.
- Control tools and materials from falling.
Ask the Crew
- Is the folding scaffold fully opened and locked?
- Are frames, hinges, braces, wheels, and platforms in good condition?
- Is the setup surface stable and level?
- Are wheel locks engaged before work begins?
- Could overreaching or dropped objects create hazards?
