“Safe Use of Hydraulic Carts”
Key Hazards
- Crush or pinch injuries from lift mechanisms
- Loads falling or shifting from raised carts
- Hydraulic failure or sudden lowering
- Overloading beyond cart capacity
- Runaway movement on slopes or uneven floors
- Trips or collisions in congested work areas
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Hydraulic carts can make lifting and positioning materials safer, but they can also create hazards if they are overloaded, poorly maintained, or used without controlling the load and lift mechanism.
Workers should inspect the cart before use. Wheels, brakes, handles, lift platform, hydraulic controls, cylinders, leaks, and frame condition should be checked.
The load should be within the cart’s rated capacity. Overloading can damage the hydraulic system, make the cart unstable, or cause sudden failure.
Loads should be centered and stable before raising or moving the cart. Uneven or tall loads can tip, slide, or fall when the platform is raised.
Hands, feet, and body parts should be kept clear of the lift mechanism, platform edges, scissors, wheels, and lowering points. Pinch and crush hazards are common during raising and lowering.
Workers should move hydraulic carts slowly and keep the travel path clear. Cords, thresholds, slopes, wet floors, gravel, and tight turns can cause loss of control.
Raised loads should not be moved unless the cart is designed and stable for that use. A high center of gravity can make tipping more likely.
Safe hydraulic cart use depends on inspection, load control, capacity limits, and keeping workers clear of pinch points during raising, moving, and lowering.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the cart before use.
- Check for hydraulic leaks or damaged parts.
- Do not exceed the rated capacity.
- Center and stabilize the load before lifting.
- Keep hands and feet clear of pinch points.
- Lower loads carefully and with control.
- Use brakes or wheel locks when positioning the cart.
Ask the Crew
- Is the hydraulic cart in safe working condition?
- Is the load within the cart’s rated capacity?
- Is the load centered and stable before lifting?
- Where are the pinch or crush points?
- Is the travel path clear and suitable for the cart?
